Max Verstappen will keep maiden title after Red Bull found guilty of .. here’s full details
Red Bull have been found guilty of breaching the 2021 budget cap, but Max Verstappen is set to keep hold of his maiden drivers’ title as his team faces a likely fine.
After months of speculation and intrigue, the FIA, motorsport’s world governing body, confirmed on Monday that three teams had breached the $145million (£114m) cap regulations, which was introduced for the first time last season.

Red Bull were found guilty of “procedural and minor overspend breaches” while Aston Martin and Williams were found guilty of “procedural” breaches only.
Red Bull – for whom Verstappen wrapped up a second drivers’ title in bizarre circumstances in Japan on Sunday – reacted by saying they were “surprised and disappointed” by the ruling.
In a statement, the team, who had always denied having exceeded the cap, wrote: “Our 2021 submission was below the cost cap limit, so we need to carefully review the FIA’s findings as our belief remains that the relevant costs are under the 2021 cost cap amount.
“Despite the conjecture and positioning of others, there is of course a process under the regulations with the FIA which we will respectfully follow while we consider all the options available to us”.

Their rivals will be following events with keen interest although many of them were travelling back from Japan at the moment of the announcement. Mercedes, for whom Lewis Hamilton lost out to Verstappen last year, did not provide an immediate reaction although it would not be difficult to guess their views.
Since the news first broke in Singapore last month that Red Bull might be in breach of the cap, Mercedes have been petitioning the FIA in the strongest possible terms to throw the book at them.
Their team principal, Toto Wolff, has called for “robust” action from FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem, arguing that any overspend might have had a serious impact on not only last year’s championship, but this year’s and next year’s too.
