When Rafael Nadal lost his opening match of the ATP Finals to Taylor Fritz, it was a major surprise. The competition’s top-ranked Spaniard lost his first-round match by 7-6 (3) and 6-1.
Fritz defeated Nadal in both service games, using the fast courts to his advantage. The 25-year-old American defeated Nadal 2-1 on hardcourts thanks to superior performance on both the serving and returning courts. He won 79 per cent of his service points and 65 per cent of his return points.
The game may have ended in defeat for Nadal, but his fans will remember him for many reasons. Fritz’s backhand clipped the net during a long exchange with Nadal late in the first set, leading Nadal to rush the net while on the attack.
