Boris Becker has revealed that Novak Djokovic was battling “inner demons” when they started working together in 2014. The German tennis icon has detailed their partnership in his new Apple TV+ documentary and admitted that Djokovic couldn’t surpass Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer until he tackled the issues.
Becker is the subject of Boom! Boom! The World vs Boris Becker, a new Apple TV+ documentary being released on 7 April chronicling his life during and after his own tennis. It covers the period in which he coached Djokovic from 2014 to 2016, with the Serb making an appearance to discuss their partnership.

While explaining how he became the world No 1’s coach, Becker revealed that Djokovic was struggling with “inner demons” that often saw him fall at the final hurdle in Major finals. And both men hinted that the six-time Grand Slam champion was the driving force that helped the Serb overcome his problems to go on and make history, since surpassing his rivals with titles and weeks at No 1.
“We spoke, I said ‘I’m too old to bulls**t you,’” Becker said of his initial response when Djokovic first reached out to him. The 55-year-old was adamant that there was a reason the world No 1 “gave it away” and “tanked it” in important matches, something Djokovic confirmed.
“It gets personal, I’m like do you want your mother to cry or do you want his mother to cry?” Becker said of his early conversations with the 22-time Major champion. “You’re a proud Serbian, you’re a proud family man, you would do anything to protect your family. That’s how you have to be. That’s the attitude.”
Referencing his Big Four rivals, he continued: “Because Rafa wants to do the same, Roger wants to do the same and Andy [Murray] wants to do the same. They want to protect their families. So now go out and do it.” Becker also admitted that Djokovic’s “demons” were so private he couldn’t discuss them.
He added: “Then we still had to overcome a couple of inner demons that I can’t talk about. Why you faltered at the last hurdle.” Djokovic himself agreed that their discussion over off-court issues spurred him on to appoint the German as his coach, telling the camera: “We did talk about all the off-court activities that could be favourable and also the other ones that are actually a distraction.

“He asked me, so what do you want from tennis? Do you have clarify of your goals? So I said of course, I want to write the history of the sport and I want to do it with you so we clicked right away.” And Djokovic used his 2014 Wimbledon final victory over Federer as an example of the difference Becker made to his game, with the Serb winning 6-7(7) 6-4 7-6(4) 5-7 6-4.
“Having him there, – he was just so serene, he was just so strong and he stood his ground. He knows exactly what I’m going through,” the seven-time Wimbledon champion said. “Okay, I’m back here again where I need to be and focused on the next point. Throughout the match there was a lot of oscillations, right? In those most important moments having Boris there just gave me that fuel and that extra inch to overcome the challenge.”
And Djokovic said his first year with Becker allowed him to taste even more success, adding: “‘14 was in a way a springboard, the big opening that was a huge wind in the sails that allowed us to really have an incredible run in the next two and a half years.”
