Carlos Alcaraz has declared that he has been lucky to win the Barcelona Open twice in as many years in the absence of Rafael Nadal, who is facing a battle to return to full fitness ahead of next month’s French Open. The veteran Spaniard has not played since January after suffering a long-term hip injury in Australia at the start of this year but will be desperately hoping to return in time to feature at Roland Garros later this year.

Nadal did not take part in this month’s Barcelona Open as a result of his injury struggles, with Alcaraz comfortably defending last year’s title to lay down an early marker as he ramps up his preparations to challenge for a second career Grand Slam triumph in Paris. However, he was quick to play down his hopes of glory after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in Sunday’s final by insisting that he has been fortunate to avoid coming up against Nadal in Barcelona over the last two years.

“I don’t want to be anyone’s replacement,” said Alcaraz when asked if he can be considered as Nadal’s heir apparent. “In the two years that Rafa hasn’t been here, I’ve been lucky or, let’s say, I’ve won the title.
“I’ve always wanted to play against the best, it’s a shame that we haven’t been able to enjoy Rafa these last two years. Let’s hope he continues to play for a long time and that we can enjoy his tennis, but obviously we are not here to take over from anyone, but to build our own history.”
