Novak Djokovic injury update as Jannik Sinner stares tennis world on desperate…
Novak Djokovic is back in action at the Rome Masters after skipping Madrid due to an injury. The world No 1 sported elbow strapping during his appearances in Monte Carlo and Banja Luka but was rid of the support during an intense practice set with Jannik Sinner on Tuesday. Djokovic was said to have won 6-3, giving the Italian a reality check ahead of his home tournament.
Both Djokovic and Sinner missed the recent Madrid Masters – the Serb carrying an elbow injury while the world No 8 was unwell. The 35-year-old has struggled so far this clay season, going 2-2 in matches, and is hoping to find his form ahead of the French Open.

And there looked to be a positive update on his injury when the top seed took to the practice court with Sinner on Tuesday. There was no elbow support to be seen as Djokovic outplayed the 21-year-old in their practice set, already appearing to be striking the ball better than he did in Monte Carlo and Banja Luka.

The 35-year-old suffered upsets in back-to-back tournaments as another young Italian – Lorenzo Musetti – came from a set and 2-4 down to defeat him 4-6 7-5 6-4 in the third round of Monte Carlo. Djokovic’s compatriot Dusan Lajovic then ousted him in the Banja Luka quarter-final 6-4 7-6(6).
Djokovic pulled out of the Madrid Masters shortly after and it seems he made the right decision to rest, as he already looks stronger in Italy. He could meet his training partner Sinner in the semi-final if both men get there, and the 21-year-old will want to turn things around after suffering defeat in their practice set.
